The book Dancing with Opposites presents for the first time the thought of Richard Kearney, the world’s leading philosopher of religion. At its centre is the concept of the possible God, which he uses to remove centuries of layers associated with religious ideas and to show that accepting a systematic critique of religion does not mean its end, but on the contrary offers the possibility of returning to the very core of the experience of faith. Kearney shows the superficiality of religious dogmatism to cultivate a sense of paradox and a mindset of unity of opposites, and he exposes as inadequate the basic religious visions and ideas in order to open up space for encounters with God in the mundanity of everyday life.
