summary

This book focuses on the Czech religious scene in the past two decades as has been captured by academic quantitative research of religion and other statistics. The first chapter provides a brief summary of contemporary sociological approaches to religion, also covering the problems of secularization and desecularization. The second chapter addresses the question of whether and how religion can be measured, what are the limitations and advantages of the quantitative approach and briefly presents the used research. Further chapters focus on the analysis of specific religious scenes. The empirical section opens with an analysis of the shifts in creed, the turnout at religious services, attitudes to churches and the attraction of religious systems. Then it proceeds to the question of the content of a religious belief and its popularity in the Czech society as well as differences in religious behaviour, stances and content of faith based on essential sociodemographic characteristics: age, sex, education and socioeconomic status.
