summary

This book presents the history and current state of golf in the Czech environment, while also covering its past and development in the European context. It is one of the first works in the Czech environment addressing this theme from a scholarly perspective. The scholar demonstrates a high level of knowledge of this area as well as a breadth of scope, dividing the theme into six autonomous chapters, combined as a conceptual whole. The text excels in factual precision while being written in an easy to read style. The chapters cover the development of golf in Europe from the 1980s through the present, golf as an Olympic discipline in 1900, 1904 and 2016 and the history of the Golfing Union of the CSR in 1931–1948. Another section of the book compares and analyzes the development of golf and tennis, two “bourgeois” sports, in communist Czechoslovakia in 1948–1989. The text also covers the construction of golf courses in the Czech Republic after 1990, including its environmental impact. The final chapter addresses golf broadcasts by Czech TV stations. This text presents an important advance in the knowledge of the theme and as it is written in an easy to read style, it may find its audience among golfing readers as well as among those who have not practiced this gentlemanly game.
