A second, expanded edition of the catalogue of illustrations by Jiří Grus, produced by the renowned comic book artist since 2006 for the Modern Czech Classics and Modern Slovak Classics series published by Karolinum Press. The first edition of the catalogue was published in 2018 for the exhibition Jiří Grus: Illustrating Classics. The exhibition curators Stanislava Fedrová and Pavel Kořínek (the Institute of Czech Literature of the Czech Academy of Sciences) present an annotated selection of illustrations for works such as Klapzubova jedenáctka (The Chattertooth Eleven) and Spalovač mrtvol (The Cremator), as well as examples of other genres in which the versatile artist has worked, including the comic book Ve stínu šumavských hvozdů (In the Shadow of the Bohemian Forest) and classical paintings. In an interview, the curators and Grus discuss the artist’s thoughts on the relationship between text and image (illustration) and the ways he incorporates his personal reading experiences into his creative work.
