summary
Jiří Levý – a passionate researcher, author of hundreds of published works, visionary, popular teacher, and expert in numerous fields. From the very beginning, his principal topic of research was differences arising from translation. His seminal work České teorie překladu (Czech Translation Theories, 1957) remains one of its kind in the way it traces the national history of thinking about translation, and with his monograph Umění překladu (The Art of Translation, 1963), Levý established himself as the founder of modern translation theory. His work has been read, acknowledged, researched, and replicated since the 1950s, both in Czechoslovakia (later Czechia) as well as abroad. This book is most likely the first attempt to provide a systematic overview of Levý’s work in the broadest sense of the word, describing his academic career and showing the interdisciplinarity of his research interests, the breadth of his theoretical and methodological assumptions, his contributions to translation teaching methodology, and his extensive educational activities reaching well beyond the national borders.
