summary

The monograph Chapters from the Philosophy of Modern Music is devoted to some of the forms
of interaction between music, philosophy, literature and film in the course of the 20th century. It is aimed primarily at the way in which to so-called Schönbergian reform, leading to the abolition of the tonal system, has been reflected in literature and philosophy. The second fundamental transformation that musical language underwent in the course of the last century and which has become the subject of noteworthy theoretical reflection is precisely the abolition of the difference between (musical) sound and (natural) noise, as it occurred, for example, in concrete music. Among the authors who are the subjects of interest in Fulka's are Claude Lévi-Strauss, Theodor W. Adorno, Michel Foucault, Marcel Proust, Thomas Mann and Alain Robbe-Grillet. Even though the book does not attempt to provide an exhausting overview of the various forms taken by the interactions in question, it shows in a representative form the variety and richness of the various methods of theoretical deliberation about the problem of 'modern music'.
