summary
Meister Eckhart (1260–1327) entered general cultural consciousness at the beginning of the 20th century and quickly gained the reputation of a mysterious mystic deeply connected with other mystics from antiquity to Novalis. Eckhart, however, was a respected university scholar and highly active monastic administrator, an author of extensive Latin writings who clearly considered himself a Christian philosopher. The central theme of Eckhart’s investigations is ‘pure reason’, intellectus, as mediated to Latin thinkers by Averroes, a key inspiration of Albert the Great, whose major disciples and followers include not only Thomas Aquinas but also Dietrich of Freiberg and Eckhart himself.
