summary

The collective monograph Artificial Intelligence as a (New) Medium analyses the impact of artificial intelligence (both analytical and generative) on contemporary high and everyday culture. It examines how the ways of creating, understanding, and using images, sounds, and texts are changing today, as well as the broader social and political implications of these transformations. The book focuses on the processes and practices of creativity, imagination, and inventiveness. Simplistic interpretations based on oppositions between what is human and what is technical are rejected. Instead, the intertwined nature of the two and the importance of specific historical bio-socio-technical configurations that define the forms of our subjectivity and community are emphasized.
The authors (Tomáš Dvořák, Martin Flašar, Vít Gvoždiak, Vladimír Havlík, Jana Horáková, Martin Charvát, Veronika Klusáková, Richard Müller, Noemi Purkrábková, Kateřina Svatoňová) offer interdisciplinary probes into the field of synthetic media, drawing on literary, music, and film studies, philosophy and epistemology, media and communication theory, digital culture theory, and art. In their studies, they discuss, among other topics, the representation of artificial intelligence in film and television, composite photography, multimedia performances, machine vision and pattern recognition, generative curation, generative music, and the linguistic and literary competencies of large language models.
