The involvement of the German army in the international ISAF’s mission from 2001 to 2014 was a watershed experience for German politics and public and had a number of consequences, including with regard to future deployments abroad. In his richly sourced work, Pavel Dvořák convincingly demonstrates the limits and pitfalls of Germany’s role as an exemplary power, which, given its size and position in Europe and the world, and with regard to allied relations, is aware of its responsibility for the security and stability of the world order, albeit one that it takes on under pressure from external circumstances rather than on its own initiative.
