summary

The myth of the 'eternal friendship' between Bulgaria and Russia is still today one of the generally accepted myths, in Bulgaria and in other countries. The aim of the work of Karel Durman (1932–2023), a Czech historian who lived in Swedish exile from 1980, is 'to expose the basic lie of this myth' and to demonstrate its mainly ideological essence.
Through detailed archival work and using a wide range of available sources, he shows that the myth of 'eternal friendship' is based on the dogma of Russia's mission as liberator (presented as a 'holy' or 'historical' mission), which is the basis of Russian nationalist and imperialist ideology.
