summary
This book presents a study of the prosody of two European languages, French and Czech, from a contrastive perspective inspired by metric and autosegmental phonology. The monograph consists of five parts: the first summarizes the main aspects of the prosodic functioning of languages and defines the epistemological framework of the study. The following three parts are devoted to the three main levels of prosodic structure, syllable, accent unit and intonation unit, with French and Czech being continuously compared on all levels. This systematic study is completed with six relatively independent empirical case studies, some of which fill in the gaps in the description of Czech prosody. The final part represents a typological summary of previous analyses.
