From the time when the population of the Veneto region sought refuge from the barbarian invasion on islands in the lagoon through the downfall of the Republic of Venice in the late 18th century, this city, boasting St. Mark’s Basilica, has left a permanent trace in the history of the Mediterranean region. Its unique fate is quite paradoxical in many respects. Its extraordinary nature is due to the interplay of seemingly contradictory influences: this city built on the borderline between the land and the sea, on the borderline between the Western and Byzantine worlds, developed simultaneously into both maritime and inland powers.
