summary
The book presents a commented selection of texts concerning the problem of individualism from various perspectives. Each chapter deals with one of the authors selected. It is introduced by a brief presentation of his work and thought, following which the reader is conducted through a reading of several of his key texts. In addition to well-known thinkers such as T. G. Masaryk, E. Rádl, E. Beneš, L. Klíma, J. Patočka and J. Mukařovský, some half-forgotten philosophers (K. Vorovka, V. Hoppe, F. Pelikán, T. Trnka) and thinkers moving on the borders of disciplines (F. Mareš, E. Chalupný, F. Tučný, A. Breisky) are also presented here, including some solitaires who, despite various intellectual fashions, clung to a dialectical way of thinking (J. Kabeš, F. Sedlák). An essential part of the selection are also three chapters devoted to significant personalities of Slovak thought (S. Štúr, G. Vámoš, H. Szántó). The volume's conclusion is comprised of chapters about the Czechoslovak variant of existentialism. This selection of texts will be complemented by a planed two-volume monograph on the Czechoslovak philosophy of individualism.
