summary

The book Constants and Changes in Monastic Life is the fourth and concluding volume of the series entitled A History of Cistercian Order in Bohemia 1142–1420, published by Karolinum Press since 1998. The final volume is a summary of findings on various aspects of the order, this time presented not from the perspective of individual monasteries, but thematically. It deals with the activities of the Cistercian Order in mediaeval Bohemia from the arrival of the first Grey Monks, monastic life, liturgy, relations with the secular world, intellectual activities of monks, and issues related to monastic economy. Where possible, comparisons of the situation in the Bohemian Kingdom with developments in other countries are made. Despite being the fourth volume in the series, the book can be considered a stand-alone work on the Cistercian Order. As in the previous volumes, the text is supplemented by rich illustrative material (about 200 photographs and 30 maps, charts, and diagrams).
