summary

This monograph uses an analysis and interpretation of the Apology of Tertullian (2nd century) to trace the changes in the self-concept of Christianity, which occurred in the dialogue with the late ancient Latin culture and administrative structures of the Roman Empire. A key role in this process was played by the notion of religio, which started to penetrate the language of Christian theology in the 2nd century, and it was in Tertullian's work that it was applied to Christianity for the first time. Christianity ceases to be presented primarily as a way (hodos) or true philosophy and becomes a "religion," a category close and understandable to the Latin cultural circle.
