summary
The book discusses the Muslim presence in Czechia and its neighboring German-speaking countries in an easy-to-read form, which, however, maintains academic accuracy and draws on data-based evidence. The individual chapters draw from the authors’ long-time work. Thus, the book provides the best of what can be found in current research on the Muslim presence in Czechia and how it is perceived by the majority of society. The overall picture shows a peaceful coexistence, the adaptation of Islamic rituals, and a trend towards the integration of Muslims in the country. However, the book does not overlook problematic phenomena. For instance, it discusses Salafism spreading among German youth and the disputes related to the construction of mosques. Furthermore, it points out the extreme Islamophobia displayed by anti-Muslim initiatives, whose intolerance of otherness, ways of interpreting Islam, and vision of the world are surprisingly similar to those of Islamic fundamentalists. Islamophobic sentiments in Czechia pose a threat that could reverse the positive trends of integrating Muslims into Czech society.
