summary

The monograph presents a sociolinguistic analysis of contemporary Spain. Based on a detailed description of the languages and dialects currently spoken in Spain, it attempts to outline language-related conflicts in this multilingual country. It describes the history and current situation of the complex relationship between the official language (Spanish) and co-official languages (Catalan, Basque, Galician). The book shows that the linguistic dimension, despite being important, represents only one aspect of a much more complex conflict and that the relationship between the linguistic dimension and the political, cultural, and social dimensions is far more complicated than how it is usually presented. Based on an analysis of current statistical data, in addition to a detailed description of the situation in the individual bilingual territories (the Basque Country, Galicia, Catalonia, Valencia, and the Balearic Islands), the monograph features generally applicable observations which show how different the individual language-related conflicts in the various territories are and how difficult it is to find a countrywide solution.
