This substantially revised and expanded edition of the text first published in 2005 reacts to the most recent developments in the field, specifically to the normative grammatical handbooks published by the Spanish Royal Academy between 2009 and 2011. The book, primarily intended for students of Spanish philology, presents the fundamentals of Spanish phonetics and phonology. It also addresses the relationship between the spoken and written forms of contemporary Spanish. The description of the phonetic and phonological system, based on research in articulation and acoustic properties, also pays attention to distinctive features of regional and social varieties of the Spanish language and consistently reflects the current state of knowledge in the field.
