summary

The publication Czech Anthologies for the Middle-School Age in 1870–1970 and Their Canonical Texts addresses functions and approaches of school anthologies in educational systems of the period. It follows thematic and genre transformations in the selection of literary texts, transformations of educational presentation of literature and presents profiles of important authors of anthologies and their methodologies (Čelakovský, Pražák, Götz). The closing chapter focuses on the question of the canonization of literature and didactic interpretation of selected canonical anthology texts (František Ladislav Čelakovský’s Toman and the Wood Nymph, Jan Neruda’s Grandfather’s Bowl, Božena Němcová’s Grandmother).
