summary
This monograph addresses the issue of “professional parenting,” a reform of residential care in Slovakia, which is similar to that in the Czech Republic. The book focuses on case studies of nine small children from three “professional families” in Slovakia. It studies the child’s development stages (based on D. Winnicott’s theory), his dependence on interaction with his “mother” and the shift of the relation towards her and the mother’s handling the dilemma of being a “professional mother” and a “permanent mother.” The printed text is accompanied by internet access to the original “raw” data from observation and interviews. Complete transcriptions of all interviews can be found on the Karolinum Press website.
