summary
Instead of dramatic stories, the book offers data without being boring by any means. It delves into often inconspicuous and concealed forms of violence that have managed to infiltrate intimate spheres of relationships and subsequently devastate them. By analysing a representative dataset (collected in the pre-COVID era), the book seeks to find answers to difficult questions – to what degree, why, and how can a relationship become a burden, to what extent can love be transformed into pain and suffering. The authors adopt a sociological approach, i.e., they regard the issue as a cultural society-wide phenomenon.
In this regard, the fact that domestic violence in its most severe forms does not concern the majority of the population brings no consolation. In a relationship, violence can always find its participants – perpetrators and victims – who often switch roles. Even modern society cannot fully guarantee us immunity against anything.
Are victims of domestic violence only or mostly women?
How often are the roles of perpetrator and victim of domestic violence swapped between partners in a relationship? Do miscommunication, unequal assignment of roles, or unhappy experiences from one’s childhood play a role?
