summary

This publication presents and critically reflects on theories and concepts that endeavor to explain the current dynamically changing economic geography of the world, and outlines the implications for the promotion of regional development and the ability to compete. Almost twenty years have passed since the initial publication of the book, and readers have thus gained a third, fundamentally revised and expanded edition. The authors also take a detailed look at two theories that significantly dominate current regional research, the theory of global value chains and the theory of regional innovation systems. They also present new approaches for supporting regional development, in particular the concept of intelligent specialization.
