summary

Mutlu Konuk Blasing, an American scholar of Turkish origin, investigates the nature of the lyric subject and its relation to poetic language. In her opinion, the seemingly private, individual consciousness expressed in a poem is only a virtual entity. Indeed, this 'I' which we encounter in lyric discourse is not is not the poet's stylized and socially anchored self, but rather it is us ourselves. Blasing emphasizes the rhetorical, public and universal nature of the poetic code, which is deeply rooted in the mother tongue. In her detailed readings of canonic works of modernists T. S. Eliot, Wallace Stevens and Ezra Pound or American poet Anne Sexton, Blasing makes use of research in the fields of linguistics, psychology and psychoanalysis. This helps us gain an insight into the complicated historical processes that have as their result speaking human subjects. If the effect of poetic language comes from the emotional charge of language itself, then the lyrical subject is in the first instance a product of the poetic code.
