summary
This monograph focuses on how women with mental disorders experience motherhood and on the factors that affect this experience. The first section of the book presents contemporary research on how women with mental disorders experience pregnancy and birth as well as their experience with medical care. The scholars also analyze current views of creating maternal identities and present successful foreign programs and methods of work employed to support women with mental disorders in their parental roles. Special attention is paid to legal provisions concerning the parenthood of people with mental disorders. The second part of the monograph is based on research which included 19 women with mental disorders and 504 experts in health care and social work in the Czech Republic. To provide a deeper insight and to better illustrate the issue, the monograph presents a case study of Ms. Eva, which describes processes, aids and methods of work that were used to support her in her parental role.
This book is an indispensable guide for social workers, special pedagogues, workers in the non-profit sector, psychologists and all who want to contribute to the improvement of the quality of support for mothers with mental disorders. The monograph is also intended for university instructors and students of secondary and tertiary schools, however, it can be stimulating for the broader public as well.
