summary

This historical analysis focuses on the dramatic developments in this north-African country which originated in the easing of the political and economic situation after 1988. The book follows the development in Algeria up to the beginning and consolidation of President Abdulaziz Bouteflik’s regime at the turn of the millennia.
In Algeria, the 1990s were a period of irreconcilable strife of distinctive political figures, interest groups and diametrically different concepts of social organization. The efforts of the exhausted authoritarian regime to implement a controlled political liberalization at the end of the 1980s were used by the Islamists whose political power, to the horror of the secular segment of the society, threatened to gain a hegemonic position. The opponents of the Islamists were able to eliminate the Islamists only after several years of bloody battles with the radical Islamist guerilla.
Using his research into original source material and press reports from that period, the scholar has attempted to bring a new and objective view of the events that can be, with a slight overstatement, called a prologue to the Arab Spring.
