summary
The book addresses the long and unjustly neglected German mathematical community in Prague, which was one of the best in Europe in the first third of the 20th century. It analyzes the instruction of mathematics at the German University in Prague from its origins in 1882 to its tragic end in 1945. Using archived material, original scholarly works, memoires written by direct participants and secondary sources, it explains the complicated status of Prague’s German mathematic community in the Czech Lands, presents its specific nature arising from Prague’s "genius loci," suggests its interconnectedness with the surrounding German world, reveals its relations to Czech as well as foreign scholarly associations and, primarily, evaluates the scientific contribution of individual mathematicians to the development of science at a global level.
