summary
This textbook, compiled by renowned linguists from the University College London, presents essential terminology used in general phonetics. In addition to the traditional description of sounds from the perspective of their articulation, it also focuses on acoustic analysis of speech and instrumental methods of phonetic research, the relation between pronunciation and spelling, phonetic transcription, speech perception, language universals, phonology and prosody. It is written in easily understandable language and does not expect any previous knowledge of the theme. The exposition is accompanied by many charts, tables and images. A glossary of terms is included at the end of the book.
The book can be used as a sound introduction into the discipline not only by students of linguistics and philology, but also by speech therapists and other experts focusing on human speech.
The Czech translation retains the original samples, which in addition to English include a number of other languages, while adding examples from Czech, which also contributes to the basic view of the phonetic structure of Czech. The IPA system is used in the transcription of all examples.
