summary

Hans Albert (* 1921) builds on Karl Popper’s critical rationalism, developing his principles (criticism, fallibilism, realism, pluralism and others) in the context of the theory of knowledge and theory of science, social and political theory. In discussion with numerous “traditional” philosophical streams, he attempts to propose a methodology to solve problems that would correspond to real cognitive practice. The Treatise on Critical Reason (1968), published in Czech for the first time, translated and with comments by Jitka Paitlová, is an original philosophical text whose careful arguments lead us through the Scylla of the endless relativism of hermeneutical, existential and religious decoys, and the Charybdis of logical determinism of positivist and analytical guarantees. In the end, all depends on deciding freely whether we would give up the dogmatic belief in certitude and move towards the truth.
