summary

This monograph presents a complete "biography” of one of the most interesting and largest sculptural and architectural works erected in Bohemia in reaction to the black death epidemic of 1713–1715. Located in what used to be cour d’honneur of Prague Castle, it is exceptional for its ideological program as well as artistic quality. The latter is reflected in the non-traditional concept of the column’s architectural plan as well as in the compositional and modeling solution of its sculpted decoration designed by Ferdinand Maxmilian Brokoff.
This monograph offers a thorough analysis of the transformation of the view of this baroque monument in scholarly texts as well as a detailed overview of the predecessors to this monument in Prague. The scholars follow the history of the column’s creation, analyze its architecture and sculpted decoration and trace the fates of this work from its ceremonial consecration in 1736 to the present time, focusing on the column’s transformations.
