The First Study of the Old Testament presents a systematic overview of essential information for the study of the Old-Testament. It opens up with an introduction into the nature of the Bible and continues through introductions into individual parts and books of the Old Testament. The general introduction addresses the divine inspiration and canon of the Scriptures, the environment and history of their origin, the nature of the original text, and their translation and explanation. The special introduction has two parts: the first focuses on the parts of the Hebrew Bible in the following order: the Law (Torah, the Pentateuch), the “Former” and the “Latter” Prophets, and Writings; while the second includes deuterocanonical books in the following order: “historical,” instructive, prophetic and “new historical.” Basic characteristics of each book is organically complemented with short exegeses of some of the key areas. While the scolar approaches the Scriptures from the Catholic perspective, he strives to make his text comprehensible for people of other religions and atheists, empahsizing generally human topics or the Jewish division of the canon. This book can help readers place their previous knowledge of the Old Testament in a comprehensive explanation of the Scriptures and serves as a basis for further and more detailed study of the Bible.
