Medical Biology and Genetics, a textbook focusing on those genetic problems that are relevant for the study of medicine, summarizes basic information in the extensive and dynamically developing field of medical biology and genetics. The text is divided into three parts, of which Part I is currently available. It contains: (a) an introductory chapter on the history of biology as a scientific field; (b) a summary of knowledge of Mendelian inheritance and information on the relation of genes and their use for the diagnosis of hereditary illnesses as well as in the mapping of the genome; (c) rules of genealogic studies; (d) the chapter “Regulation of the Cellular Cycle and Cellular Signaling,” which summarizes contemporary knowledge on inter-cellular communication; (e) the chapter “Mitosis and Meiosis,” which describes the process, importance and potential defects of the division of eukaryotic cells; and (f) the chapter “Cytogenetics,” which summarizes the most up-to-date knowledge of the chromosomal equipment of humans, new karyotype examination techniques, and describes the existence of a broad range of defects associated with chromosomal aberrations.
