summary

This book presents the life and work of Pavel Aretin of Ehrenfeld, whose map entitled A New and Accurate Description of the Kingdom of Bohemia was first published in 1619 (and republished in 1632, 1665 and before 1747) and of which only a very few copies have been preserved due to its frequent use during wars. For the first time ever, the scholars identified and compared toponyms from the glossaries of all editions, and compiled unique tables with 9,600 historical toponyms from the Czech lands, which are matched with their current geographical names and cross-referenced with map symbol numbers on historical maps. This results in a valuable source of knowledge about the settlement and economic development of Bohemia in the 17th century.
