summary

This book represents one of the most systematic attempts to find a theoretical basis of computer technology and the impact it has on contemporary culture. Manovich tries to place new media within the histories of visual and media cultures, analyzes basic principles, operations and forms, while at the same time problematizing some of the simplifications, including the myths of interactivity, and polarization of digital and analog media.
Although from today’s perspective, some of his theses may appear outdated, they continue to be an attempt to form a theory of what new media consists, but also bear witness to the events at the turn of the 20th and 21st centuries, a significant turning point in the forms our media and culture took.
