A concise autobiography by one of the best-known postwar historians, this book represents a first Czech attempt at so-called "ego-histoire". The author describes the organization and the course of study in the critical years 1938–39, his involvement in the Charles University's Faculty of Arts and his publishing activities after WWII as well as the problems of Czech historiography in the period of normalization. The book is accompanied by an overview of the author's works.
