summary

This unique manuscript, a collection of 120 Japanese poems illustrated in fan-shaped pictures dating as far back as the 16th century, represents the most extensive preserved original of the "fan books” (ógi no sóshi) in the world. It was brought to the Czech Lands in 1906 by Joe Hloucha, a Czech writer and collector, who purchased it during his first trip to Japan. For the past sixty years, it has been deposited in the Oriental Art Collection of the National Gallery in Prague. The poems were translated by Helena Honcoopová, a former head of the Oriental Art Collection, who also placed them in the Japanese literary and artistic context. Her collaborators included Joshua Mostow, a world-renowned expert in ancient Japanese poetry, and Makoto Yasuhara, a Japanese researcher from Rikkyó University in Tokyo.
