summary
This book analyses one of the grave topics of Central European learning's recent history, the story of "universities behind bars" in the countries of the former Soviet bloc. This work by American historian John Connelly, professor at the University of California at Berkeley, is based on a long research in European archives and the use of "oral history", as in 1989-1998, Connelly got many testimonies from Czechoslovaks, Poles and Germans who took part in the socialization and sovietization of education in the 1950s, be it politicians, people from the political parties' apparatus, university teachers or former students. Thanks to the author's knowledge of the totalitarian education system and consistently comparative approach, the book, which was published in English in 2000, is an interesting contribution to the history of Central European society.
