summary

This publication, Conversations about Šafránek. With a Smile about Life, Growing Old and Old Age, is dedicated to Pilsen native professor Jaroslav Šafránek, one of the great Czech personalities. From 1948-49 he served as Dean of the Medical Faculty in Pilsen, where one of the pavilions now bears his name; it is considered to be one of the most architecturally important buildings in the city of Pilsen in the period after World War II. At the same time, 85 years ago he also put the first complete apparatus for the transmission and reception of mechanical television into operation.
It is almost always the case that prominent representatives of various disciplines look back on their life experiences or speak out to readers in the form of interviews. The book Conversations with Šafránek does not aspire to provide a detailed description of the personal and professional careers of our eminent experts, but rather to share their personal experiences with growing old and old age. And for this reason, only personalities who have already crossed the imaginary boundary into old age are represented in the book. Some of the participants knew Professor Šafránek personally, others only indirectly, some treated the issue of old age from the perspective of their professional experience, while others have only non-professional personal experience. The reader thus receives a book full of life wisdom, optimism, but also clearly acknowledged truths of their own age. A colorful mosaic of approaches to life which surely is worth not only reading, but also following.
