summary
The textbook Basics of Medical Physics describes the rudiments of medical physics, and the methods students would most commonly encounter in clinical and experimental medicine. What makes medical physics specific is the application of physical methods on living organisms. It is therefore an interdisciplinary scientific discipline, which combines physics and biological sciences. We believe that this fifth edition, updated and expanded with new chapters and new illustrations, will again find its readership among medical professionals as well as those from other disciplines such as biomedical engineering.
The methods explained in the book are based on different physical principles. Some of them, e.g. using optical magnifying lenses or X-rays, have been known for more than 100 years, while others are more recent. The latter include diagnostic tools such as magnetic resonance imaging or positron emission tomography and the use of Leksell Gamma Knife as a therapeutical instrument.
This book provides a comprehensive overview of the possibilities of using various physical methods in medicine and the readers should be able to understand the described physical relations in a broader context and apply the methods in different medical fields.
