summary

This book presents the history of sociological thought with regard to the transformation that modern society is currently undergoing. The scholar draws an analysis between the crisis of traditional society, which gave birth to modernity, and the contemporary crisis of organized modernity, the arrival of which has been captured from different perspectives by the classics of sociology. On the one hand, this book attempts to provide an explanation of basic categories of sociological thought in about a dozen of leading sociologists of the 19th and early 20th centuries, while on the other hand, it strives to theoretically relate this thought tradition to the most current issues of our time. The scholar concludes that many elements of the sociological tradition may serve us to understand the current transformations of modernity.

Is the current development a triumph of modernity or its failure?
Is it possible to come up with something new after Marx, Weber and Pareto?
Does the process of individualization mean an increase of freedom?
Who was more mistaken – the philosophers of the Enlightenment or conservative thinkers?
Were organizations a hope of modernity or its curse?
Is modernity moving in a circle?
